Darwin Families Society
Darwin Families Society
As Darwin is a postgraduate college, a significant proportion of our students arrive with their families. The Darwin Families Society exists to ensure that College activities and events are inclusive and welcoming to students with families, as well as organising regular events and activities for families with children of all ages. Moreover, the Families Society cuts across the traditional divisions of College life, as alumni, staff and Fellows all participate together.
Popular Families Society events include the annual Christmas Carols, Mulled Wine and Festive Decorating event (jointly with the Darwin Choir), the Easter Egg Hunt, the Summer BBQ with bubbles and face painting, and monthly Families Film Nights (jointly with the Film Society). We have a wide range of toys and games for little ones, ensuring that they always experience College as a magical fun place that they love to visit.
To join the Families Society and be notified of upcoming events, you can subscribe to our mailing list here: http://mail.dar.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/families, and also join our Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/606988156132033/.
If you would like to get in touch or have any questions, you can contact Janna Hastings, the head of the Families Society, via dcsa_families [at] darwin.cam.ac.uk.
The wider University also offers lots of resources for students with families. The University Childcare Office website provides important information for student parents about local nurseries, childcare bursaries, and the University Playscheme. Their Guide for Student Parents is a useful resource. The Childcare Office also produces a student parent newsletter with up-to-date local information about services and activities for families and children. To be put on their mailing list, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Cambridge University Graduate Union (GU) holds a number of events especially for student families. There are events for parents with preschool children. Every week, on Friday from 10:00AM, the University Centre on Granta Place hosts the Graduate Union Parent and Toddler Coffee Morning. The Coffee Morning is a chance to meet up with other parents and, from 10:30, the GU Groupworker leads activities for the children too.
For school-age children, the GU runs Saturday Screening at the GU in 17 Mill Lane every fortnight at 4:00PM during the academic year. During the summer vacation, the GU holds Fun in the Sun, a morning of games for all ages that culminates with a celebration picnic. Look out, too, for special family days at the GU, like the 2015 Dinosaur Day supported by the Cambridge Museums, and events for students' spouses and partners.
